1000 Dreams

1000 poems

The city of Derby, hustling, bustling town

over years has seen changes most profound.

My grandad used to take us there, my twin sister and me.

We'd take a short ride on the bus to Derwent-upon-the-sea

(actually the river-side but it was good enough for me.)

He would take us to the market (what an atmosphere) -

everyone was shouting "Get your fruit and veg cheap here."

I never forget the smell of fish, unusual varieties to see,

looking goggle-eyed, straight at me.

And at Markeaton Park, the river was calm and serene,

the willow would hang in the water, and the ducks would swim round and preen.

Lots of industry around in Derby - Rolls-Royce is still here today,

"They make aeroplane parts - in the war they had a big part to play."

Crown Derby China, beautiful to see,

Sold around the world, exclusive pottery.

Arts and theatre, plays and pantomime,

Derby has it all, to fill your spare time.

Florence Nightingale's statue - a figure from the past,

stands outside the hospital, a mould from a stone cast.

And there's Brian Clough - respected and known by all,

the manager of Derby County, who loved the game of football.

Derby City Centre is combining old and new -

whatever you want, there's always something for you.

It's had a massive makeover, I'm telling you no lie,

so please pay Derby a visit, I'm sure you'll find a bargain, something nice to buy.
